Teen Read Week™ is a national program created by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). It began in 1998 and is held annually during the thirdweekofOctober. Its purpose is to encourage teens to be regular readers and library users. Teen Read Week's sub-theme for this year is Seek the Unknown @ your library, which encourages teens to explore and learn about the unknown through mystery, adventure, sci-fi, and fantasy books.

This would be a great time to try out our Online Teen Book Club.
Each week you'll receive a daily email with one to three chapters of the featured title. It's a great way to read new

authors and try genres you might not have thought about. Recently I ready The Alchemist: the Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott. Now I'm a hard-core mystery reader and venturing out to a fantasy novel was not in my comfort zone. Don't tell anyone but I never really got into the Harry Potter series. Now I've completed all six books in the series along with some short stories that were available to download as ebooks.

Seek the unknown. Browse the shelves for titles and try out the online book club. You can get a virtual inside look and some new titles and you just might find a new favorite author.Your friendly Amherst Librarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00664217943058958163noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2748127212836965579.post-66259526040510043052013-09-24T12:56:00.000-07:002013-09-24T12:57:26.039-07:00What's the Assignment?School is well underway and we've had lots of students coming in looking for that required book that they need for an assignment. Maybe you need a science fiction book or historical fiction read. Some classes have had to have a biography, which has been pretty picked over as of late. Most biographies are either about 125 pages (check the Sterling biographies) or 400 pages and involve a lot of dead presidents.

The Amherst Public Library has put together a page of links to make it easy to find an available book here at the library to fit your assignment. Check out the school assignments link for quick access to updated feeds for various lists such as mystery books and fantasy books. From there you can check to see if the book is available, how many pages it is, and even reserve the book to be waiting at the library when you get here.

Remember that we do not sort books by reading level, ever. So check both Junior Fiction and Young Adult sections for available books. Still can't find a book? Stop at the Reference Desk and ask for some suggestions. We can also check to see when a book will be back and help you put a book on reserve.Your friendly Amherst Librarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00664217943058958163noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2748127212836965579.post-75723774717485576552013-08-09T09:04:00.003-07:002013-08-09T09:10:11.114-07:00The Library has Gotcha Covered!<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">Have a stack of new

Looking for some MineCraft maniacs. Mrs. Ashton is trying to set up some Minecraft game days. Anyone with any server administration experience should volunteer this summer to help with our programs. We are hoping to have an online version as well as some game days at the library.
Registration for summer reading begins June 3 at the library. We've been getting a lot of press about our teen Zentangle workshops. Teens have learned the basics of what it takes to create different tangles and have branched out into creating their own works of art.

Check out the cool lotion dispenser the brought me! Wait....look at the other side...
It's hard to think about class schedules and cafeteria rules when August arrives with warm weather and sunny skies. When the big day does arrive remember the Amherst Library has you covered with our annual text book covering event that begins August 21 from 3 - 5 p.m.

Stop by the library and use our supplies for covering those textbooks and have a snack provided by the library staff bakers. Sort of like Keebler Elves with sensible shoes who make a mean chocolate chip drop cookie.

Remember we have 12 public computers when it comes to writing those term papers and more important, printing those papers off. Check out our catalogue for your school's reading list and use our online databases for sourcing out journal articles.

Yes, the school year is fast approaching but there's still time to check out a good book and kick back and relax before the first day of school. Perhaps you could consider these books research, as in, "Sorry, can't mow the grass right now because I'm researching the psychological conundrum of sophomoric interactions." That should get you some time. Read on:
Today at 2 p.m. Matt Jergens will be at the Main Street Community Center (255 Park Avenue) bringing his comedy juggling act to Amherst. Matt was one of our most popular programs last summer and he is back by popular demand for another program and juggling workshop. Be amazed by his unicycle act, by his unusual choice of objects to juggle, and be amazed at how much you can learn.

The show begins at 2 p.m. and afterwards we'll break into groups for the juggling workshop. Last year Matt brought in spinning plates, Chinese spools, and scarves for us to try our hand at learning to juggle.

Summer reading is all about fun. Keep in mind that this week you can also attend Magic 101 on Thursday, June 28 at 6:30 p.m. here at the library with Professor Zap. If you're in grades 4 or even if you're 104, you can learn a bit of magic to entertain your friends. Learn something new this summer!
Your friendly Amherst Librarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00664217943058958163noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2748127212836965579.post-49085043868357206552012-06-19T13:08:00.000-07:002012-06-19T13:11:28.757-07:00Space out

This Thursday, June 21, is the big Sky Dome planetarium show. Join us at St. Joe's School gym for a virtual field trip through the universe. The show lasts about 45 minutes and takes you through our solar system for an up close look at Saturn and its moons as well as a look at the Milky Way.

Sure it looks like a giant silver slug and you can crawl inside where you'll find more than 120,000 LED lights that are synchronized to showcase a sun rise and sun set, the Northern Lights, and even a lesson on the mythological creatures behind some of our constellations. Any Percy Jackson fan will want to be on hand for that.
Members of the library's teen summer reading program stopped by today for It's Just Lunch. Everyone enjoyed the culinary skills of Mrs. Ashton and Mrs. Stanley along with some Guitar Hero and X-Box Kinnect. I think the Kinnect Sports won out as a favorite with teens trying their skills at the field games including the 100 yard dash and the hurdles.
Everyone in attendance put their name in a raffle and when the gong sounded every ten minutes we drew a prize winner. There were some sweet prizes like cotton candy and of course Nerd ropes. I think everyone was a winner...in more ways than one.
Stop by next Monday at 2 p.m. when we'll have Mike Leuszler in the house for our super hero drawing workshop. These books by Nicholas Einhorn have a table of contents so you can zero in on the type of trick you'd like to learn. I've always loved card magic but found advanced tricks to require a lot of practice and hand moves that were difficult for smaller hands. Magic with Cards is a book in our children's non-fiction section that has all the good card tricks like Surprise Aces and the Magnetic String. Many of these tricks are easy to learn.

Remember Harry Houdini originally performed as the "King of Cards" at the beginning of his career. It was later that he develop his escape act. Whatever your dream it's all up to you to make it your own.
Everyone loves magic and we're going to try something new this year. We've booked Professor Zap, a Cleveland area magician who you may know from his appearances at our library and more recently he has been the headliner for the annual magic show at the Rose Cafe in Lorain.

The Professor will be putting on a short magic show for us on Tuesday, June 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Main Street Community Center, 255 Park Avenue in downtown Amherst. Come to the show and watch as he demonstrates some of the magic that you could be performing very soon. The Professor will be at the library for a three part workshop designed for those in grades 4 through age 104.

Recently he did a once a month workshop during the school year in Cleveland. He had students attend along with senior citizens, everyone loves a good magic trick. After the workshop was completed they had a magic show that was hosted by Professor Zap and featured participants in his workshop. It was a huge success and something I think we could do here in Amherst.

So after the free show, mark your calendars for the three workshops that will be held here at the Amherst Public Library on Thursday, June 28; Tuesday, July 17; and Tuesday, August 14. Then plan on taking part our magic show in August.

Hey what are the summer reading prizes?

The Teen Summer program has some great prizes this year. Remember you can earn points by reading, attending an event, or by completing other activities like bringing in donations for the Amherst Food Bank. For 250 points we've got an array of silicone bracelets you can choose from. Some even glow in the dark.

The second prize level is at 500 points. We've got some Bubble-icious pens for you! These are perfect for writing about your favorite summer activity. For 750 points you can have your choice of a drawstring book bag or a dream journal. Both are just waiting to be filled up and taken on your next summer adventure.

Remember, online registration begins this weekend....and you can log points online beginning June 1. Registration will begin at the library on June 4.

For each prize level you get a ticket for entering into the raffle of your choice. Food, movies, and a Target gift card are on the list. Your friendly Amherst Librarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00664217943058958163noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2748127212836965579.post-38858102427023815402012-05-22T12:21:00.001-07:002012-05-22T12:26:41.691-07:00What's going on this summer?

Dream BIG this summer. Sure the Avengers movie is out on the big screen but why not design your own larger than life super hero? The sky's the limit, even if you don't draw faster than a speeding bullet, perhaps you can take advantage of our Super Hero drawing workshop with local artist Mike Leuszler.

This free workshop takes place Monday, June 18 from 2 - 3:30 p.m. here at the Amherst Public Library. No special drawing ability needed. Mike will show you some ideas that will have you sketching out your own avenging figures before you know it.
This year, even without a colorful contest, our teen program registered 292 members not counting those who registered online. That's fantastic.

Thank you to all the kids who took part, volunteered, and took part in our programs and activities. You really made it a fun summer. The drawing workshop, magic tricks, craft days were all made more fun by your involvement.

Two separate classes came to the Main Street Center where local magician and escape artist Ron Price led the workshops. Even some parents stayed around to learn a few new tricks. Everyone was surprised to learn there are a few easy tricks with simple items you have around the house, like rubber bands and even paper clips.
The yo-yo workshop with Jake Willis drew lots of local enthusiasts who learned a few new tricks. His high tech, souped up yo-yos were a big draw and people were practicing tricks like the "Jamaican Flag" and "Psycho Baby".

Remember this week at the library we have a Teen Game Day on Thursday, June 17 beginning at 3 p.m. We'll have Guitar Hero up on the big screen and others games going on so stop by if you're around. This Saturday, June 19 is our first of two Yo-yo Workshops with Jake Willis, president of the Lorain County Yo-yo Club. Stop by at 1 p.m. Saturday and bring along your yo-yo or just come by and watch Jake as he demonstrates just what you can do with a little string. No....this is not your father's yo-yo.
